Since 2010 the number of teachers in our schools has increased by 28,000 – but just 533 of those are men.

It’s not a surprise as I’ve experienced this in schools and education for a long time (30years plus- eek!)
Even when at college, my teaching degree was mainly a female orientated option. Teaching is a female dominated profession.

However we need our children to experience both male and female role models.
As a female leader in education I have endured, as a woman, especially in the world of SEMH. My path has often been softening the attitudes to aggression and anti social behaviour with a pragmatic and more caring model (mothering?)

I do think male leaders in education offer this too but back in the day it was definitely about control and punishment.

But we need male role models – ones that show our young men strength in patience and those that can hold a moral compass… not just by braun and muscle, banter and bravado.
Maybe it’s ok for boys to be boys- as long as we teach them the right way?

Toxic Masculinity – it’s a hot topic. But what are we going to do about it?
