At Newton Wood Barn, the focus for both provisions is the same — Connection, Community, and Creativity.
Both share the same foundations:
Green spaces
Food for growth
A relational approach
The differentiation begins with individualised engagement stages. It depends where each young person is in their journey — how ready they are to explore curriculum, and how far they are prepared to extend their experiences, learning, and knowledge.
It’s about meeting children exactly where they are.
The freedom within an Alternative Provision curriculum is second to none. It allows for flexibility, responsiveness, and meaningful engagement.
Within the school provision, there is often a greater focus on sequencing, knowledge-building, and the structured development of learning over time.
Both are valuable. Both are needed. But they look different in practice.
For example, if a group visited to watch lambing:
How would that experience differ between AP and school?
What would the learning look like?
How would it be evidenced?
What outcomes would we prioritise?
